  • So long.

Since almost all of my friends have long left this place (I'm sorry, but facebook notes barely count as "blogging" to me), I have decided that it's time for me to do the same. Nobody reads this anymore. I will still keep this journal up in order to post comments and keep up on the people who do still update, like Jenn, Mackenzie, and a few others. Otherwise, I don't see the point in having two journals. If anyone has livejournal and wants my username, let me know.

Otherwise, farewell, Xanga. It's been a good run.

    Barstow House!

Well, I'm all settled into my new house in Eau Claire. Moving day was stressful, but at least it's all over and done with. My room is very long, has six windows, and has only ONE three-prong outlet for the room. The bathroom and kitchen are pretty nice, and we finally got cable and internet installed this past Monday. (Charter ended up cancelling our initial order). Even with 5 of the 6 girls living in the house this summer, it's pretty quiet. Everyone's off working, shopping, or with their boyfriends, so living there is definitely not as loud as I thought it would be. My only complaint is that nobody (except for me and Jessica) does their dishes...so I'm often stuck washing them all just so the kitchen doesn't look so hideously gross. That's going to get old FAST. *grumble*

Work-wise, it's been tough. I've been working my two jobs at the library, totaling about 20 hours per week, and I just started at Pick n' Save yesterday as a bagger. I was originally a bakery clerk, but after my first day, they said that my availability didn't work with their schedule, so they made me a bagger/cashier. It's all right, I guess. They barely give me any hours, though, so I made an appointment to give plasma as a way to help me buy food. Bank account's already running low, and I'm really afraid that I'm not going to be able to save enough rent for the school year. But I'll make it somehow. Yesterday I made the best cranberry muffins in the world, and I'm hoping that I can keep finding cheap, good recipes to make for myself. Right now I've been living off of the same baked pasta dish for 3 days.

That's all I know for now.

Honeymoon in Purdah: An Iranian Journey

Plenty plenty plenty has happened since April 1st, haha. Since I know you all want to hear about it, here's the major events of the past two months:

*NO BRAND CON was at the end of April, where I worked as a volunteer. No Brand Con is an annual anime convention here in Eau Claire, run by a student group on campus. It involved little sleep and lots of boring shifts sitting/guarding the staff room, but it was still an unforgettable experience. We had over 100 cosplayers in our contest, which I attended, plus I met Tiffany Grant (a voice actor for Azumanga Daioh, among other animes), bought pineapple gummies and peach and chocolate almond Pocky at the vendor room, tried ramunae, a lychee-flavored Japanese soda, watched AMV Hell 0 with a ton of other guys (if you know what that is, hats off to you), saw most of Hard Rock Zombies, which is just the best zombie film ever made, and lots of other stuff. I also got pulled over for the first time with Daniel, because the police thought we were drinking (!) Although we hadn't been, HA! Crazy crazy weekend, that was. I ought to scan in the drawing I had drawn of me as an anime character.

*Joined a book club about Iran at the library. Great experience, plus free books!

*Signed on the last person for our house next year. I am now officially living with five other girls, hooray.

*At Daniel's urging, bought a (very) used Game Boy Advance with Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen games. Daniel took red and I have green. Playing it has been terrific, and has awoken the crazy addicted 'gamer' in me that I try to keep hidden. Right now, I'm stuck in the Seafoam Islands, trying to escape so I can get more Ultra Balls to capture Articuno with ;)

*Went to the university pow-wow. It was every word for beautiful.

*Was asked to help interview the new library director that the campus library is hiring.

*This Monday, I acquired a free! table from a friend in the dorms who didn't have the space to take it home with him. The table's name is "Steve," and aside from the fact that he is a little rickety and held together by duct tape, he is the table I've always wanted to own. On the same night, my Ebay account was hacked into by spammers from Greece, who stole my account to spam people with. After THAT, I had to pull an all-nighter to write a six-page paper, because getting my account straightened out took some time. I stayed up for an estimated 31 hours in a row before getting to take a nap. It's early Thursday morning, and I still don't feel quite right.

*After a month of job searching, I landed a job today as a bakery clerk for Pick n' Save! Very exciting, indeed. That makes three jobs this summer. I'll be working circulation and reserve at McIntyre, with a possible shelving position in July, and Pick n' Save. At least two of my jobs are at the same place...

*And right now, dear readers, I'm writing to you from my work computer at the library. I've been here since 1 AM, and it's been so wonderfully slow. When I'm done at 4, I might not even bother sleeping. We'll see. Next Monday I'm working a 12-8 AM shift, the longest shift I've had to work here (most people work about 10 hours a week). I expect to die.

I'll be home May 18th-May 31st. I think I'll work the first week at ABC and take the second week off to pack up and say goodbye to everyone before I officially move to Eau Claire. It's been one hell of a ride.

Take care. Good luck with finals/graduation/life in general.

Generation Me: Why Today's Young Americans Are More Confident, Assertive, Entitled--and More Miserable Than Ever Before

Spring break was a week ago already, which is hard to believe. This year, I went to the Mall of America and the Minnesota Zoo with Daniel, Jessica, and Nick, and the whole experience was busy, rushed, but great. I discovered a cool store called Ragstock at the mall, which sells both new and "recycled" clothing. Got a purple shirt from there, as well as some headbands. Didn't really buy much else, except for a bag of spiced chai. Daniel bought all kinds of useful cooking supplies at the Le Gourmet Chef store. I unfortunately didn't get much time to look at the zoo, but it was fun while it lasted. Pictures are on facebook.

I can hardly believe it's April 1st. TWO MONTHS from now, I'll be moving into my house in Eau Claire!! This Thursday, I went to tour it again with Jessica, who will hopefully be our sixth roommate. I liked the house even better the second time. My room has at least three windows, and ample closet space. For my bed, I'm pretty certain that I'm going to buy a futon, the same kind Heather bought for our room with the 8'' cushion, and just sleep on that. It'll be easier to transport than a regular bed and will be just as comfortable. Plus, I can have the versatility of having a couch whenever I need it. I'll probably get random furniture like a bureau and maybe a desk at yard sales.

So far, my job situation is looking a little desperate. I need 35-40 hours a week in order to pay rent, eat, and be able to save for the school year, when I won't be able to work as much. The library can only offer me about 20 hours right now, so I need to find another job to supplement that. The off campus jobs are looking a bit sparse, especially because I don't have any transportation, but I hope I can get something. At the very least, I can give plasma twice a week and make $50, but that won't be enough. Hmm. It's going to be an interesting summer.

Life is fine, but next week looks busy. An astronomy exam on Monday, an English paper and a take-home exam in American Indian studies on Thursday. Plus, I still have to finish my portion of the beading project we're doing for the class. I love doing the beadwork-it makes me feel creative-it's just a busy time.

Spring break starts TOMORROW, and I can't believe it. Yes, I'm going back to ABC again to work, but this year I'm doing something fun, too-Daniel, Jessica, Nick, and I are going to Minneapolis this weekend. We're staying at Jessi's house tomorrow night since the dorms will be closed, and then we're off to the Mall of America! Swimming, eating out, possibly a trip to the zoo...it's going to be a blast. Daniel and I were already up there two weeks ago for a sci-fi convention (but no, I'm not really into that genre), and we had a wonderful time. This trip I'm hoping to find some clothes (especially shirts), a certain book, and some Hello Kitty stationary. Oh, and maybe something from the kitchen store to help furnish my kitchen for the summer, and maybe something from the Sam Goody store, if it's still around...and well, you get the point. Daniel's driving me home on Sunday or Monday, depending on the time our group decides to leave. Then it's back againnn to ABC, hopefully for the last time. I don't think I'll officially "quit," though, just in case I need to return during the two-week gap when the dorms are closed and the last people move out of our house. By June 1st, my friends and I will be ready to move right in.

I can't help but be excited that I'm staying in Eau Claire this summer. Really, I didn't think I was going to, but why pay rent all summer for a place I'm not actually living in? Granted, there may be only two or three people living with me, but I think it'll be fun. As long as I can work at the library this summer and get 35-40 hours per week, I think I'll be able to live somewhat comfortably, pay rent, and even manage to stash some money away. So far I'm guaranteed two jobs in circ and reserve, which will probably add up to about 25 hours a week, and then I'll have to find one more job in order to make enough money to live on. However, I'm determined to find something agreeable. Certainly I won't miss sweating over the countertops and panini grill at ABC.

My cell phone has committed suicide, but I should have a new one by Monday or Tuesday. Not that I'm much of a cell phone addict as it is, but I feel a little disconcerted not having a phone handy while I'll be traveling this weekend. Dammit, I've developed a habit of having it everywhere I go-I'm no better than anyone else.

Ben & Jerry's Peach Cobbler ice cream is beckoning me from the food court...

About Me

  • Hey, I'm Crystal and a freakin' SOPHOMORE at UW-Eau Claire! College life is both comfortable and catastrophic, but I think I'll pull through. Working at Atlanta Bread and the campus library makes me deliriously happy, as well as books, Fiona Apple, Led Zeppelin, and adding people on Facebook. And a good nap can cure anything.
